Get answers to common questions about the National Student Drone Competition

1. Do schools need to own Rocket Drones equipment to participate?

No. Rocket Drones equipment is not required to participate. Schools may attend training and practice sessions during the event and then compete using provided systems.

2. What grades can participate?

All students in grades 3–12 are eligible to participate in the competition when registered through a school with a teacher present.

3. Do students need prior drone or competition experience?

No prior experience is required. The event includes training and warm-up sessions to help students prepare before competing.

4. How many events can a student compete in?

Each student may compete in up to two competition categories.

5. Is a teacher required to attend?

Yes. All student participants must attend with a school-affiliated teacher or educator who is responsible for supervision.

6. Can parents attend the event?

Yes. Parents and guardians may attend by purchasing a Spectator Pass, which includes venue access and a meal voucher.

7. What is included with the Student Competitor Pass?

The Student Competitor Pass includes:
  • Competition entry (up to two categories)
  • Rocket Drones competition jersey
  • Day access to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center
  • Meal voucher to the Galaxy Grill
  • Access to the career panel and awards ceremony

8. When is the commercial drone career panel?

The commercial drone career insight panel takes place on Day 1 (April 30) as part of the awards ceremony.

9. What happens on Day 2?

Day 2 (May 1) is a dedicated exploration day at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, including park access, a meal voucher, and optional add-on Space Camp packages.

10. Can schools attend without competing?

Yes. Schools may attend to train, explore, and learn about Rocket Drones without competing.

11. Where is the event located?

The event is hosted at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

12. Will exact schedules be provided?

Yes. A detailed schedule with exact times will be shared with registered schools prior to the event.

13. How do we register?

Registration is completed online. Schools and individuals can select passes, competition categories, and optional add-ons during the registration process.
